Can You Drywall in Cold Weather? Hanging and Finishing in a Michigan Winter

Drywall can go up in a Michigan winter, but joint compound cannot cure in a cold room. Here is what temperature the space needs, what goes wrong in an unheated garage or addition, and what to do with mud that froze.

Yes, you can drywall in cold weather, but only the hanging can be done cold. Taping and finishing need a heated room. The drywall manufacturers ask for the space to be held at 50°F or warmer for about 48 hours before joint compound goes on, and kept there until the last coat is dry. In a colder room the compound dries slowly or not at all, the tape can lose its bond, and the joints are more likely to crack later.

The question comes up every year once the first frost reaches Metro Detroit. This year that was the weekend of October 16 to 18, when the National Weather Service in Detroit put Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties under frost advisories two nights in a row. Garages, additions, cottages and new builds that were going to be finished "before winter" are now being finished in it.

Hanging the board in the cold

Drywall sheets can be hung in an unheated space. The board does not mind cold, and screws hold the same at 35°F as at 70°F. A few things still matter:

  • Bring the board inside first. Board stored in a freezing garage or on a trailer should sit in the room it is going into before it is hung, so it is not cold and damp when the heat comes on.
  • Keep it dry. Snow tracked in, a leaking roof on an unfinished addition, or condensation on cold sheets will soften the paper face.
  • Insulate and close up before you hang. On an exterior wall or a garage ceiling, the insulation and any vapor control go in first. Once the board is up, that wall is closed.

Taping and finishing need heat

Joint compound is mostly water. It has to dry, and in the case of setting-type compound, it has to set, before the next coat. In a cold room:

  • Drying takes days instead of hours, so coats get stacked on wet coats and shrink later.
  • Tape can bubble or lift when the compound under it stays wet too long.
  • Compound that freezes on the wall before it dries loses its strength and has to be scraped off and redone.
  • Temperature swings crack joints. A room that is heated during the day and left to go cold at night moves the framing and the board, and the new joints are the weak spot.

The fix is temporary heat, set up before the first coat and left running until the last coat is dry and sanded.

Temporary heat without new problems

  • Do not blow heat straight at the wall. Compound that dries too fast on the surface cracks.
  • Do not overheat the room. Warm and steady is the goal, not hot.
  • Watch the moisture from fuel-burning heaters. Propane and kerosene heaters put a lot of water vapor into the air. Without some ventilation, that moisture slows drying and can condense on the cold side of exterior walls. An electric heater or the home's own furnace, once it is connected, is the cleaner choice.
  • Keep the heat on after the last coat. Primer and paint go on a dry, warm wall, not one that was heated for an hour that morning.

What to do if your joint compound froze

Premixed compound left in a garage or a truck overnight can freeze. Let the bucket thaw slowly at room temperature and do not heat it. Once it has thawed, stir it. If it mixes back to a smooth, even paste, it can usually still be used. If it stays lumpy, grainy or watery, throw it out. Powdered setting compound is not harmed by cold while it is dry, but it still has to be mixed with warm water and applied in a warm room.

Unheated garages and seasonal spaces

A garage, a three-season room or a cottage that is not heated all winter can be drywalled, but plan for it:

  • Finish it while it is heated. Even if the space will sit cold later, the taping and finishing need the 48 hours of steady heat.
  • Expect more seam movement. A space that goes from below freezing to warm and back moves more than a house does, so a hairline at a joint is more likely over time.
  • Think about moisture. A garage with cars bringing in snow and road salt is a damp space in winter. Moisture-resistant board is worth considering on the lower walls.
  • Ask your city about an attached garage. The wall and ceiling between an attached garage and the house usually have their own drywall requirements. Your city's building department can tell you what applies before you hang anything.

Hairline cracks that show up in a heated house once the furnace runs are a different problem, covered in our article on why ceilings crack along drywall seams in heating season.

New construction and additions in winter

Builders across Metro Detroit, from Macomb Township and Shelby Township to Novi and Canton, keep drywall moving through the winter by getting the building closed in and the heat running before the finishers arrive. Windows and doors in, the roof dry, the furnace connected or temporary heat in place: that is the point where finishing can start. Our page on new construction drywall covers how we sequence hanging, taping and finishing on new homes and additions, and our residential drywall page covers smaller projects in occupied homes.

What drives the cost

We do not price winter drywall work from a photo, because a few things change the job a lot:

  • The size of the space and how many ceilings are involved.
  • Whether the space is heated, or temporary heat has to be set up and kept running.
  • The finish level you want before paint.
  • Access, such as a detached garage, a second floor addition or an unfinished site.

For repairs and small patches we often book same-day or next-day when a crew is in your area. Larger hang and finish jobs are scheduled from a written scope. Call (313) 236-4558 with photos for the fastest answer.

Most rooms are Level 4 — taped joints, screws covered, ready for flat or eggshell paint. Rooms with big windows, gloss paint, or wallpaper need Level 5 (full skim). We note this in every written scope so your painter does not reject the walls on walkthrough.

Yes. We take a sample, test orange peel, knockdown, or skip trowel on a board, and blend repairs so the patch disappears after paint. Older Metro Detroit homes often mix smooth additions with textured main floors — we plan transitions so they are not visible at doorways.

The scope: square footage, ceiling height, finish level, texture, and access (occupied vs empty). Repairs depend on the size of the damage and the texture that has to be matched. Commercial work is bid from plans or a site walk with phased schedules for occupied buildings. Call (313) 236-4558 for a price on your job.

Yes. We sub hang/finish crews to GCs, handle tenant-improvement drywall, and invoice on net terms for repeat clients. W-9 available on request.

After drying is confirmed, we flood-cut, remove damaged board, hang replacement, finish, and texture-match. We document square footage and photos for adjusters. Do not close walls until moisture readings are in range — we can coordinate with your restoration company's timeline.

Drywall looks simple until corners, fire ratings, or occupied spaces are involved. Ask any contractor for a written scope that names the finish level, texture, cleanup, and schedule before work starts. BH Drywall Metro Detroitputs all of that in writing on every job.
