Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown on Friday, September 11, 2026. Our team is taking the holiday off, and we want everyone who works with us to know exactly when we are closed and when we are back. Below you will find our holiday hours, a little about the holiday itself, and a short wall checklist for starting the new year with a tidy house.

Rosh Hashanah holiday hours

  • Friday, September 11: open our regular Friday hours, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
  • Saturday, September 12: closed. This is the first day of Rosh Hashanah, and it is also Shabbat.
  • Sunday, September 13: closed for the second day of Rosh Hashanah. On a normal week we are open on Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, so please note the change.
  • Monday, September 14: back to our regular hours, starting at 9:00 AM.

Our regular schedule is Sunday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. We are closed every Saturday. If a repair is on your list for after the holiday, give us a call once we reopen on Monday.

What is Rosh Hashanah?

Rosh Hashanah means "head of the year." It is the Jewish New Year, observed on the first and second days of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, and this year it welcomes the year 5787.

The holiday begins at sundown. Here in Metro Detroit, candles are lit at 7:31 PM on Friday, September 11, and the holiday ends at 8:28 PM on Sunday, September 13, according to Hebcal's times for Oak Park, Michigan. The first day, Saturday, September 12, is also Shabbat, so the shofar is sounded on the second day, Sunday.

A few of the traditions you may see on holiday tables this weekend:

  • Apples dipped in honey, a wish for a sweet year.
  • A round challah, which stands for the cycle of the year.
  • The greeting. "Shana Tova" means "a good year," and "Shana Tova u'Metukah" means "a good and sweet year."

Yom Kippur follows soon after, beginning at sundown on Sunday, September 20.

A new-year wall checklist

A new year is a good moment to look around the house, especially with family coming over for holiday meals. None of this takes long, and you can do all of it yourself.

  • Patch small nail holes and dings before guests arrive. A little lightweight spackle, a putty knife, a light sanding once it is dry, and a dab of paint take care of most of them. Work in good light so you can see when the spot sits flush with the wall.
  • Look for cracks at the corners of doors and windows. Hairline cracks often show up first where a wall meets the corner of an opening. Take a photo and note the date, so later you can tell whether a crack is getting longer or coming back after a patch.
  • Check the ceiling under bathrooms for water stains. A yellow or brown mark on the ceiling below a tub, shower or toilet can be a sign of a slow leak above it. Find the source before you paint over a stain, or it may simply come back.
  • Keep a little matching paint for touch-ups. A small jar of each room's wall color, labeled with the room name, lets you cover a patch with the same color instead of guessing at the store.
